Music Tuition
I offer 1:1 music lessons in-person in Glasgow or remotely through video call. The lessons I currently offer are:
Voice
Piano (beginner)
Theory & Musicianship
I offer voice lessons to singers of most styles (pop, jazz, classical) and experience levels. Some key aspects I support with include:
Developing confidence & combatting performance anxiety
Learning effective breathing technique for singing
Extending vocal range and gaining greater control over different registers
Working on ear training and building a stronger understanding of music overall
I primarily teach those with little to no piano experience, or those returning to piano after a long period of time. In beginner piano lessons, you will likely:
Learn proper posture & playing technique
Learn basic music theory & how to read sheet music
Learn to construct chords & chord progressions
Play short practice excerpts / pieces and repertoire of your choosing
While theory & musicianship content will factor into voice and piano lessons, I also offer support with developing music theory and musicianship skills alone. This can involve learning to read and write sheet music, developing an understanding of harmony and music structure, and working on ear training skills.
About My Teaching
I would describe my teaching style as being highly person-centered. I recognize that it is a big step to come to music lessons for the first time, so I meet every student where they are. I adapt my approach to each individual's readiness level while gently encouraging exploration of new skills and techniques.
In many ways, I find teaching to be similar to therapeutic / mental health work in that it's the relationship that makes the most impact. When students feel supported, understood, and safe to try new things (and make mistakes), that's when the most progress happens. I am always open to collaborating with students to come up with a plan for how to best meet their goals, combining both my knowledge of music and their knowledge of themselves.
I have successfully worked with students who struggle with anxiety to learn to manage this in rehearsal and performance settings, as well as students (including children) who are neurodivergent. I aim to be as attuned as possible to each person's needs in the learning environment, and ultimately want students to enjoy the process as much as possible.
Finally, for singers, I am trained in Vocal Health First Aid, which means I am able to recognize common vocal injuries and ailments, provide practical advice, and refer when necessary. I always prioritize singers' safety and will adapt lessons if anything could be unsafe for the voice.
